retro romance: modernism

If you could pick a decade, or a span of 10 years, what would it be?  For me it is hands down, never wavering, late 50's to late 60's, 1957 to 1967.  Music, fashion, interiors, you name it, this was a time of style.  Life, to me, seemed easier back then.  Maybe easier is the wrong word, but families actually spent time together, not at the soccer field, but at home.  The family unit was tight, but it didn't mean the adults didn't have fun, enter the cocktail party (which has a history of it's own, a future "Retro Romance" installation).

Before I can jump into my decade, we must go back; 1898/99 with Richard Riemershmid a founding member of the Deutscher Werkbund (1907).  The Deutscher Werkbund helped to promote German design while many of the ideas were used later in the Bauhaus movement.

Richard Riemerschmid's first furniture was in the style of neo-Gothic.  In these pieces you can see the clean modern lines, somewhat organic but without "decoration".  Along with furniture design, Richard Riemerschmid was also an architect and an interior decorator, a pattern we will see with other pioneers within the evolution of modern design.

love it, live it: color inspired interior, white lounge

Okay, I know "white" is not technically a color...

but thanks to Syrie Maugham, rooms filled with varying shades of white, even cutlery had white porcelain handles; remained fresh and warm, not austere and cold.

working on...retro romance: interior style, 1950's

I am squealishly excited about the first Interior Style installment for the Retro Romance series.  Through this series we will learn that design; fashion, interior, furniture, etc., doesn't just "happen", it is created.  There is a reason and a function.  And there is style, boy is there style.

dining in: pasta with mussels and kale

My New Year started out squealishly tasty, and there wasn't even any bacon involved!  This delish dinner was super simple to make, great for last minute entertaining or just a nice midweek taste splurge.  To make it quick and easy, I used frozen mussels.  They are pre-steamed, plump, meaty and delicious!

2 oz extra virgin olive oil
1 clove of garlic, thinly sliced
Large pinch of red pepper flakes
1/2 T Italian seasoning (or 1 T of fresh herbs)
6 oz long pasta of your choice
1# mussels
1/2 C Dry Vermouth
2-3 C kale leaves, torn

Heat oil in a 12 inch pan.  Add garlic, pepper flakes and Italian seasoning.  Sauté until garlic is soft, do not overcook.

Start pasta water and cook when ready.  The mussels and kale take about 8 minutes, so cook pasta accordingly.

Add mussels.  Cook over med-high heat for about 2 minutes.  Add vermouth, simmer 3 minutes.  Add kale, tossing for 3 minutes until wilted.

Add pasta to mussels and kale goodness.  Toss.  Serve.  Enjoy!
